Meet Jason Trejo, a freshman accounting major at Illinois State University who’s diving into college life headfirst. Hailing from Downers Grove, Illinois, Jason came to campus ready to explore, get involved, and start building the foundation for a future career that excites him.
Finding His Path in Accounting
Jason chose accounting because he loves structure, problem-solving, and the challenge of making sense of numbers. He initially thought he might combine accounting with a pre-law track, but after his first semester, it became clear that accounting was where his passion truly lies.
Looking ahead, Jason plans to pursue a master’s degree in accounting, embracing the evolution of his goals with confidence and curiosity. His story is a reminder that college is as much about discovering yourself as it is about coursework.
Getting Involved on Campus

Jason has jumped into campus life with both feet. He’s a member of the Student Accounting Society, connecting with firms and professionals while learning firsthand what the field has to offer. He’s also part of Delta Sigma Pi, a co-ed business fraternity focused on professional growth, networking, and mutual support.
Through ROTC, Jason has explored leadership and discipline in a way few classes can offer. While he’s decided it’s not his long-term path, the experience has left a lasting mark on his personal growth.
On campus, Jason also serves as a floor representative in his dorm, keeping residents informed and engaged. And when it’s time for fun, he channels his creativity as Marketing and Communications Coordinator for the Pickleball Club, promoting events and welcoming new members to join the excitement.
Gaining Early Career Experience
Even as a freshman, Jason is building real-world experience. He recently completed a marketing internship at Total One Restoration, learning about business operations and professional communication along the way. This summer, he’s stepping into an accounting internship with The Drake Hotel Chicago, ready to apply classroom lessons to hands-on work.
Looking Ahead
Jason hopes to build a career as a consultant or advisor in the Chicagoland area, staying close to family while pursuing professional growth. His vision blends ambition with connection, showing that career goals and community values can go hand in hand.
The Impact of Green Halo Scholars
Jason credits the Green Halo Scholars program for helping him navigate college life with confidence.
“It really feels like I have a village around me,” he says. “Sara and Dayna are amazing people who’ve helped me get ready for what’s ahead and made me feel like I’m never alone in the process.”
That support has empowered Jason to balance academics, extracurriculars, and career opportunities with confidence and excitement.
Life Outside the Classroom
When he’s not in class or meetings, Jason stays active and focused on personal growth. He enjoys pickleball, golf, reading, and hitting the gym, and his ROTC experience has fueled a strong passion for self-improvement.
A Favorite Class
For Jason, Honors Mindset Seminar stands out. The class goes beyond typical coursework, encouraging creative thinking, personal growth, and developing the mindset needed to succeed academically and personally.
Advice for Future Green Halo Scholars
Jason encourages scholars to dream big but stay intentional.
“Set both long-term and daily goals,” he advises. “Long-term goals shape your direction, and daily goals keep you moving forward. And remember, it’s okay if plans change. Growth often means discovering new paths and passions. Just don’t lose sight of your values.”
With his drive, curiosity, and dedication, Jason is already laying the groundwork for an exciting future. We can’t wait to see where his journey takes him next.
