by | Sep 27, 2024

Luci Kazaitis is a freshman at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), majoring in elementary education. As a first-generation college student raised by a single mother and adopted from Guatemala, Luci’s journey is one of resilience and determination. Her passion for teaching began in high school at Lyons Township, where child development classes sparked her interest. By her sophomore year, she knew she wanted to become a teacher, leading her to choose elementary education as her major.

Starting Strong at UIUC

At UIUC, Luci has found a supportive community within the College of Education. Her professors, especially her EDCU 101 teacher, have made her feel welcome and valued, reinforcing her decision to pursue teaching. In high school, Luci interned in a first-grade classroom at her former elementary school. This experience solidified her passion for teaching and prepared her for college.

Career Goals and Green Halo’s Support

Luci aims to teach first or second grade near her home after graduation. She credits the Green Halo Scholars program for its crucial support during the college admissions process. Mentors Tracy and Sara provided invaluable guidance, boosting her confidence and helping her make informed decisions. Outside of academics, Luci enjoys running, working out, playing the piano, reading, and arts and crafts. Spending time with friends also enriches her college experience.

Advice for Future Scholars

Luci advises future Green Halo Scholars to seek help from mentors and utilize all available resources. She emphasizes trusting the process and believing in a positive outcome, even during tough times.

Luci exemplifies the spirit of a Green Halo Scholar, showing that with passion, support, and determination, anything is possible. We look forward to her future achievements as an educator!
