The Green Halo Scholars Program

Supporting Scholars from Application Through College

Here is how our program works.

First, scholars are nominated by their school counselor in the spring of their junior year. After receiving a nomination, prospective students will complete an application and short, casual interview with Green Halo staff.

Next, our program kicks off in late May-early June when our scholars meet their mentors, who they work 1-on-1 with for the entirety of the school year. Mentors are trained volunteers who meet regularly with their scholars to keep them on track. Scholars also have access to tutoring and test prep provided by our community partners.

Scholars meet weekly as a group to receive group college counseling and coaching from our program director. From panel discussions about career paths with local professionals to college visits with admissions officers across the country, we help students research college options, complete applications, and adhere to deadlines.

Financial feasibility is important to us, and we help our scholars with every step of the financial aid process. From applying to schools that are a good financial fit, to filling out the FAFSA, to understanding and comparing financial aid packages, our priority is to make college achievable and affordable.

Once scholars receive their financial aid packages and determine the school that is the best fit for them, we assist them in the transition from high school to college. Our summer alumni picnic welcomes recent graduates into our Green Halo alumni network, and we offer summer workshops to prepare them for the rigor of college.

But, the fun doesn’t stop there! We support our scholars through college, too. Our College Success Coach is in touch to ensure that our alumni are excelling in college, finding jobs and internships, and on their way to an abundant future.
