Usha Schmit

I joined Green Halo Scholars as a mentor in 2023 to guide high school seniors through the complexities of the college application process. I now serve as the organization’s Volunteer and Community Engagement Manager, to ensure every mentor is positioned to effectively advise their students, expand our volunteer network, and build and nurture community partnerships that increase opportunities for our scholars. Originally from the western suburbs, I earned my undergraduate degree in Spanish Literature and Urban Studies from New York University and my Juris Doctor from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign Law School. After practicing law as a corporate attorney, I transitioned my focus to raising my family and volunteering in our local schools. I later returned to the legal field to provide pro bono counsel and advocate for underrepresented individuals. A resident of Oak Brook, I live with my husband and our three children, who are navigating high school and college, as well as our two cats and golden retriever. In my free time, I enjoy reading and spending time outdoors.
