Kiala’s story begins in Chicago, Illinois, but her formative years were spent in Willowbrook, a nearby suburb. As a first-generation student, Kiala is on the path to becoming the first doctor in her family. Her passion for science and helping others has driven her to pursue a career in medicine, overcoming numerous challenges along the way.
Currently, Kiala is a Senior at The University of Miami, majoring in Health Science Pre-Medical with a minor in psychology. She chose this path to gain the foundational knowledge and prerequisites needed for medical school. The combination of health science and psychology equips her with a well-rounded perspective, essential for effective patient care and communication.
Kiala is involved in an impressive list of on-campus organizations that reflect her commitment to community building, mentorship, and advocacy for diversity, equity and inclusion. As a Beyond the Horizon Mentor, she supports incoming multicultural students, fostering their personal and academic growth. Her role in the Enough Mentorship for Multicultural Women committee involves developing programs that connect women of color on campus, providing them with tools for personal and professional development. Additionally, Kiala contributes to the Students of Culture committee, leading marketing efforts for educational symposiums on diversity and social responsibility, and she also enjoys working with the Multicultural Student Affairs Office, engaging in projects that promote an inclusive environment for all students. Her involvement doesn’t stop there! Kiala has also served as the Fundraising Director and is now Secretary for Project Sunshine, where she organizes events to support children’s hospital initiatives and engages directly with hospitalized children. Plus, as a Champions for Change Ambassador, she promotes diversity, belonging, and inclusion across campus, leading discussions and initiatives that foster a more inclusive environment.
Kiala’s experiences extend beyond campus activities. She has volunteered at the Ronald McDonald House, worked in a nursing home, and shadowed a general surgeon. These roles have strengthened her desire to pursue a career in medicine, providing her with valuable insights and hands-on experience.
After graduation, Kiala plans to take a gap year to gain more experience and prepare for medical school. She intends to obtain her EMT license and continue shadowing various medical specialties. Her goal is to apply to medical school for the Fall 2026 cycle, with the aspiration of becoming a compassionate and skilled physician.
Green Halo’s Support
Being a Green Halo Scholar has profoundly impacted Kiala’s college experience. The program has provided her with mentorship, job preparation, and support during challenging times. It has been a constant source of encouragement, helping her navigate both academic and personal hurdles. “When I was struggling to secure housing during my sophomore year, they helped me navigate that process and ensure I had a place to live. The program’s check-ins and constant motivation have helped me push through difficult times, and I’m grateful for their unwavering support throughout my college career.”
Kiala also has a creative side, finding solace in drawing and painting, which helps her unwind from her academic workload. When she needed a break from her rigorous STEM courses, she registered for ART101 with Professor David Marsh, who made the class enjoyable and enriching. His support and encouragement helped her explore her creative side, which helped her balance her workload and relieve stress.
