Finding Her Path from Lithuania to Miami

by | Oct 31, 2025

When Smilte moved from Lithuania to the U.S. at 16, she was stepping into a new world. Her family settled in the Chicago suburbs, where she began her education and started to imagine what her future might look like. Today, she’s a junior at the University of Miami majoring in Computer Science with a minor in Mathematics, but getting there took time, courage, and plenty of exploration.

“I went through a long journey to discover what I’m truly passionate about,” Smilte said. “I first started in Marketing at Illinois State University, then transferred to the University of Miami and switched to Marine Science. After exploring different fields, I realized that I’m a very analytical person, and Computer Science is the perfect match for me. I’m glad I took the time to explore different options before finding the right path.”

That thoughtful approach is what defines Smilte’s college experience. She has embraced new challenges, learned to adapt, and found ways to keep growing in every environment she’s been part of.

At the University of Miami, Smilte works at the Toppel Career Center as a Guest Experience Assistant. A job that has helped her develop confidence and professional skills while supporting her peers. “I match students with career coaches, provide professional guidance, and help run career fairs and other events,” she explained. “I really enjoy working there because I learn a lot about career development and opportunities, get to connect with employers, and help other students succeed.”

Mentorship and Encouragement

Green Halo Scholars has been part of her story from the beginning, offering mentorship and encouragement through moments of transition. “The most impactful part was the support I received from my college coach when I decided to transfer to a different university,” Smilte said. “Melissa was extremely helpful and supportive during that process.”

Through Green Halo, she also joined BravenX, a semester-long program that helped her strengthen her resume, refine her cover letters, and prepare for life after college. It’s all part of her plan to build toward a career in cybersecurity, ideally within the tourism or hospitality industries.

Outside the classroom, Smilte’s curiosity extends well beyond computers and code. She loves traveling, freediving, and spending time in nature. She’s also been getting back into cooking and experimenting with new recipes while continuing to learn new programming languages in her free time.

Her journey hasn’t been linear, but every detour has taught her something valuable. Her advice for future Green Halo Scholars reflects that wisdom: “Take advantage of all the opportunities available and make the most of the resources provided. Also, build a strong relationship with your mentors – their guidance can make a huge difference in your college journey.”

From Lithuania to Miami, from Marketing to Computer Science, Smilte’s story is proof that the best paths are the ones we build through exploration, resilience, and the courage to keep learning along the way.
