Finding His Path in Information Sciences

by | Dec 12, 2025

For University of Illinois junior Suchy Li, college has been a process of exploring interests, discovering hidden strengths, and learning how to pivot when something no longer feels right. As a first-generation college student from the Chicago area, he has been intentional about shaping his own path and paying attention to the subjects that spark genuine curiosity.

Today, Suchy is an Information Science major, but that choice came after several meaningful twists.

Discovering a New Academic Direction

Suchy originally planned to pursue civil engineering. That plan shifted when chemistry became a repeated hurdle and he started paying closer attention to the kinds of topics that truly engaged him. One of those moments came during a recreation and technology class in his freshman year, which introduced him to the idea of using data to improve parks, recreation areas, and tourist locations. The experience stayed with him. As he explains, “I didn’t know it at the time, but I enjoyed that kind of topic and I talked about it with my advisor when I met with her about it.”

His advisor encouraged him to look into the Information Science major. Even then, he was unsure. “At first, I was kind of skeptical because I was trying to pursue Civil Engineering.”

Everything began to take shape when he took IS 101 and met a friend who was already majoring in Information Science. She became an important guide as he explored the field. “She showed me all about the information science major, which gradually made me interested more about it.”

That introduction helped him realize how much he enjoyed topics related to the creation, organization, search, and use of information, along with elements of computer science, data analysis, and human computer interaction. IS 101 confirmed it was the right direction and gave him a foundation he was excited to build on.

Life at UIUC

Suchy is now in his junior year at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign. Most of his time outside of class is spent working at the on-campus dining hall, something he balances with his course load. He’s also a Green Halo Peer Leader and supports current high school scholars during weekly Tuesday meetings. He’s also hoping to secure an internship in his field before next summer. He is exploring roles such as data analyst or knowledge manager and wants to make sure his eventual job aligns with the skills he is building.

A Standout Class

Among all the courses he has taken so far, one clearly rises to the top. His favorite class is IS 202, the Social Aspect of Information Technology. The material resonated with him because it connected directly to current events and technology topics that shape daily life. “It was covering topics that ranged from social media misinformation and disinformation, AI chatbots and the impacts it has, filter bubbles, and many more that have real world examples and have it explained in class was a thrill to listen to.”

The supportive professor and thoughtful discussions made the experience even more memorable.

The Impact of Green Halo

For Suchy, becoming a Green Halo Scholar has been a consistent source of support throughout his college journey. He says the program has helped him stay proactive and ask for help sooner rather than later. “Being a Green Halo Scholar has impacted my college experience in seeking help and resources. It makes me be on top of things and seek help as soon as possible rather than putting it off until later.”

Developing the habit of reaching out early has made a real difference as he navigates challenges common to many first-generation students.

Looking Ahead

Outside of his major, Suchy enjoys exploring programming languages and diving into random topics that catch his interest. He hopes to find a job related to Information Science after graduation, even as he continues to narrow down which direction feels right.

When asked what advice he would give to future Green Halo Scholars, his answer is simple and powerful. “Ask as many questions as needed if you are unsure. Do not hold back on your questions if you need help. Reach out if you need help.”

Suchy’s story is a reminder that your path becomes clearer over time, especially when you stay curious, follow the subjects that pull you in, and reach out for support when you need it.
